In the summer of 2023, Harvey residents on the 15300 block of Myrtle were suddenly told they would need to give up their homes for a flood relief project connected to the Mayor's desire to build a Central Park on Myrtle. We found out that this would necessitate taking homes, properties, and demolishing most or all of the historic former Ascension-St. Susanna Catholic Church campus. After this shocking news, residents gathered to protest the project, went to speak to the MWRD at their meeting in Aug. 2023, and spoke out in the first and only public feedback meeting hosted by the MWRD and the city of Harvey on Sep. 7, 2023. Harvey Historical Society started a petition calling for alternatives to this project and gathered more than 1200 signatures. We've also gotten feedback from federal officials that deal with climate change, who called the project unnecessary and just plain bad science. Despite widespread opposition, Mayor Clark and the MWRD refuse to consider reasonable alternatives, which leads us to believe there must be some financial shenanigans or something else going on behind the scenes. Why so much secrecy, and why won't they listen to taxpayers?
